New Delhi. The southwest monsoon has begun its withdrawal, currently passing through Bhatinda, Fatehabad, Shivni, Ajmer, Deesa, and Bhuj during its return phase.
This means that the monsoon is currently circling Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Meanwhile, the density of rain clouds over Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra in the central and northern parts of peninsular India is expected to increase next week, potentially hindering the monsoon's return journey.
According to the Meteorological Department, areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat from which the monsoon has already departed are also expected to receive rainfall during the last week of this month.
This means that heavy rains are likely in many states of the country between September 25 and October 1, 2025. According to the Meteorological Department, during the week under review, above-normal rainfall is expected in the central and peninsular regions of the country,
and normal or above-normal rainfall in northwestern and eastern India, while below-normal rainfall is expected in the northeastern states.
The Meteorological Department had set the departure date of the monsoon on September 17th, but it departed from the far western part of Rajasthan three days earlier, on September 14th. However, during its return journey, it may rain in several states, partially affecting Kharif crops.
Crops are ripening in many areas, and untimely rains are feared to affect their quality. During the current monsoon season, the country has received 108 percent of the normal average rainfall. Excess rainfall has even caused flooding in many areas.
