The situation in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in Kangra district, highlights a significant issue affecting both Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Above Poverty Line (APL) families.

The Public Distribution System (PDS) is a crucial lifeline for many residents, as it provides essential food items like pulses, edible oils, and salt at subsidized prices. However, due to a shortage of these items in government depots for the past two months, many people are struggling.

Ration cardholders who rely on the PDS are currently facing a severe lack of these essential goods. While tur dal, rice, and sugar continue to be supplied, essential items like edible oil, pulses, and salt have been unavailable, leaving many cardholders empty-handed when they visit their local ration shops.

This has led to increased hardship for the people, particularly BPL families who already have limited sources of income. With the cost of pulses and edible oils soaring in the open market, these families are finding it increasingly difficult to afford basic necessities.

The situation is compounded by the fact that many BPL and Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP) cardholders rely primarily on their pension as their main source of income.

With rising prices in the market and no affordable options available through the PDS, they are being pushed into a dire situation.

The Himachal Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation has acknowledged the issue and mentioned that the tender process for procuring pulses and edible oils is nearly complete.

They expect supplies to reach the ration shops within a week. However, until then, the people in Kangra district will continue to face significant challenges.

This delay in the supply of essential food items is not only putting strain on the people of Himachal Pradesh but also raising concerns about the reliability and efficiency of the Public Distribution System, which is intended to safeguard the basic food security of the most vulnerable sections of society.
