New Delhi. During the current season, there are reports of fennel production in the country being better than last year. It is noteworthy that due to record production during the year 2024, the producers did not get a fair price for their produce. Due to which the producers sowed fennel on a lesser area for the current season. According to the information received, this year fennel was sown on 92 thousand hectares in the major producing states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and other states. Whereas during the year 2024, the area of fennel sowing was 1.97 lakh hectares.
Production
Due to weak sowing and adverse weather, there are reports of a significant decline in the production of fennel this year. During the current season, there are reports of fennel production being 18/20 lakh bags (each bag is 55 kg). Last year the production was estimated at 38/39 lakh bags. In the year 2023, the production of fennel was 20/22 lakh bags.
Not much slowdown
Currently, the prices of fennel have been quoted with a slowdown but a lot of slowdown in prices is not possible. It is worth mentioning that at the beginning of the current month, the export price of fennel was running at Rs 89/90 per kg, which after becoming Rs 106/107 at the highest, the demand has been affected and then the prices came down to Rs 102/103. Sources say that at present, apart from Gujarat, the arrival of new fennel has also started increasing gradually in the markets of Rajasthan. Due to which the market may decline for some time, but with the decrease in arrival, the prices will improve again.
Record export
Due to the slowdown in the prices of fennel in the last season, a spectacular increase of 110 percent was recorded in the export of fennel. Whereas the income has increased only by 17 percent. According to the data released by the Spices Board, during April-December 2024, the export of fennel was 67154 tonnes and the income received from export was Rs 64701 lakh. Whereas in April-December-2023, the export of fennel was 31939 tonnes and the income received was Rs 5554 lakh. Record export of fennel has been done in the first 9 months of the current season 2024-25. Earlier in the year 2021-22, the record export of fennel was 40139 tonnes.
