Kiev. Ukraine, which has been embroiled in a fierce war with Russia for a long time, has been performing poorly this year in exports of various agricultural products, including peas.

Data from the Ukrainian Statistical Service (USS) shows that pea exports from there declined by 33 percent during the month of June compared to May.

According to the USS, Ukraine exported 16,653 tonnes of peas in May, which declined to 11,121 tonnes in June. As a result, only 87.095 tonnes of peas could be exported from Ukraine during the first half of the current calendar year i.e. January-June 2025, which was much less than the shipment of 1,37,402 tonnes in the same period of the year 2024.

During June 2025, 4173 tonnes of peas were exported from Ukraine to Pakistan, while 1570 tonnes were shipped to Malaysia and 1106 tonnes to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The remaining goods were exported to other countries. With the start of supply of new pea crop in Ukraine, the pace of export is now expected to pick up somewhat.

On the other hand, during the period under review, the export of sunflower seeds from there increased by a huge 244 percent, but its total quantity remained limited.

According to the USS report, only 368 tonnes of sunflower seed was exported from Ukraine in May, which jumped to 1267 tonnes from June.

It is noteworthy that Ukraine is a leading producer and exporter of sunflower and its value-added products. During the first half of the current year, only 47,814 tonnes of sunflower could be exported from there, which was much less than the total shipment of 1.89 lakh tonnes in January-June 2024.

In June, the highest 1144 tonnes of sunflower was exported from Ukraine to the United Arab Emirates, while 76 tonnes were shipped to England and 22 tonnes to Italy.

Sunflower production in Ukraine is likely to decrease significantly during the current marketing season as compared to last year.

From there, special emphasis is being laid on increasing the export of sunflower oil and sunflower meal instead of sunflower seeds.
