The Indian government has launched a pilot initiative for contract farming aimed at boosting pulse production, particularly in regions with untapped potential for growing pulses.

Under this new initiative, farmers in Bihar, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat are being encouraged to cultivate pulses with a guarantee that their entire production will be purchased at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

This is a significant move to increase both the sowing area and overall pulse production, especially in non-traditional pulse-growing regions.

In the initial phase, contract farming will cover 15,000 acres, with plans for systematic expansion. The government is targeting states like Bihar, Bengal, Assam, and Jharkhand, where the soil and climate are favorable for pulse cultivation.

While pulses are traditionally grown in large quantities in states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana, the potential for expanding cultivation in eastern India remains high.

Furthermore, in states like Orissa, farmers have shown a growing interest in pulse farming in recent years, reflecting the success and encouragement of such initiatives.

By offering a guaranteed price for pulses through MSP and expanding cultivation areas, the government aims to address both domestic demand and supply challenges, and support agricultural diversification.
