Chana Market Under Pressure Due to Weak Demand

New Delhi: The chana market remained subdued this week due to weak demand for chana dal (split gram) and besan (gram flour). Limited buying by dal mills has kept the market under pressure. Meanwhile, the commencement of e-auctions for old chana stocks by NAFED in several states suggests that market pressure is likely to persist in the near term. However, arrivals of chana in producing markets are steadily declining, and the availability of imported chana remains limited. Trade sources indicate that, given the tightness on the supply side, the likelihood of a sharp drop in chana prices appears low for now. Market experts anticipate that demand for chana dal and besan may rise with the onset of the festive season in July, potentially providing support to the market. Due to weak demand, Delhi chana prices fell by ₹75 per quintal this week. By the weekend, 'Madhya Pradesh line' chana was trading at ₹5,850–₹5,875 per quintal, and 'Rajasthan line' chana at ₹5,950 per quintal. Experts believe the market's future direction will depend on improvements in demand and NAFED's sales activities.
Ports
Increased selling pressure from importers and sluggish buying led to a decline of ₹50–₹75 per quintal in imported chana prices this week. Consequently, prices settled at ₹5,750 per quintal for Mumbai-Tanzania chana, ₹5,950 for Nhava Sheva-Australia chana, and ₹5,800 for Mundra chana.
Rajasthan
Weak buying by dal millers resulted in a price drop of ₹50–₹100 per quintal for Rajasthan chana this week. By the weekend, prices stood at ₹4,800–₹5,525 per quintal in Jodhpur, ₹5,900 in Jaipur, ₹5,300–₹5,600 in Bikaner, ₹5,300–₹5,470 in Kishangarh, and ₹5,200–₹5,500 in Kota. Maharashtra
Due to increased selling by stockists and rising demand from pulse millers, gram prices in Maharashtra recorded a decline of ₹50–100 per quintal during the week.
