Pea prices improve due to weakening of selling
Kanpur. The pea market has shown signs of strength in the current week. Pea prices rose due to reduced selling by importers and stockists and improved domestic demand. Meanwhile, the Union Agriculture Minister has expressed concern over the duty-free import of yellow peas. The Union Agriculture Minister recently said that duty-free import of yellow peas is adversely affecting the domestic pulses market, causing losses to local farmers and traders. He has recommended imposing 50 percent customs duty on the import of yellow peas. Since this statement, selling in the market has weakened and buying has increased, which has supported the prices.
The last week of August is going on and pea harvesting has started in Canada, which is likely to increase global supply. The initial yield of the crop in Saskatchewan, Canada's largest pea producing province, is said to be good, which may put pressure on prices in the future. Even though the Government of India has extended the deadline for duty-free import of yellow peas till 31 March 2026, but due to the ongoing sluggishness in the domestic market, importers are not showing the expected activity in this direction. Meanwhile, pea production in Russia is estimated to be around 45 lakh tonnes, due to which Canada will have to face tough competition in other markets including India. Russian peas are cheaper in prices, which can be more attractive for the Indian market.
Due to weakening of importers' selling and increase in demand, the prices of imported peas saw an increase of Rs 50 per quintal during the current week and the prices became Mumbai Canada 3450 rupees Russia 3250 rupees and currency Canada 3250/3275 rupees and Russia 3150/3175 rupees per quintal at the weekend. The prices of Kolkata peas also improved by Rs 25 per quintal this week and the prices became Canada 3750 rupees and Russia 3450 rupees per quintal. Due to increased buying, Kanpur pea prices registered a rise of Rs. 75 per quintal this week and the price reached Rs. 3500/3550 per quintal at the weekend. Similarly, Lalitpur pea prices increased by Rs. 50 per quintal this week and reached Rs. 3150/3350 per quintal at the weekend. Due to improvement in demand, Orai pea prices increased by Rs. 25 per quintal this week and the price reached Rs. 3100/3125 per quintal at the weekend. Due to increase in demand, Mahoba pea prices also increased by Rs. 100 per quintal this week and reached Rs. 3200/3500 per quintal. Due to all-round support, Madhya Pradesh pea prices increased by Rs. 50/75 per quintal this week and the price reached Rs. 3100/3250 for Bina and Rs. 3150/3200 per quintal for Damoh at the weekend.

Due to sluggish demand, prices of peas dal witnessed a fall of Rs. 50 per quintal during the last week and with this fall, the price at the end of the week remained at Rs. 3850/3900 in Kanpur and Rs. 4000/4100 per quintal in Indore.
