Limited fluctuations in sugar prices amid normal trading
New Delhi. Although there are signs of increase in industrial demand and domestic consumption of sugar due to the onset of intense heat in many states of the country, but buyers are not in a hurry to buy it in view of the easy supply and availability situation. As a result, during the week of 12-18 April, a mixed trend was seen with limited fluctuations in the mill delivery price and spot market price of sugar. The tender price of sugar in Maharashtra and Karnataka fluctuated slightly.
Mill Delivery Price
During the week under review, the mill delivery price of sugar improved by Rs 10 each in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Punjab and Rs 20 in Bihar, while it softened by Rs 10 in Madhya Pradesh. In western Uttar Pradesh, it remained at the previous level of Rs 4160 per quintal. A fluctuation of Rs 20-30 per quintal was recorded in Gujarat. There, the demand of buyers remained low in M and S grades.
Spot Price
Spot price of sugar remained stable at the previous level of Rs. 4300/4380 per quintal in Delhi but increased by Rs. 35 to Rs. 4160/4260 per quintal in Indore, Rs. 25 to Rs. 4175/4250 per quintal in Raipur, Rs. 25 to Rs. 4300/4360 per quintal in Kolkata and Rs. 20 to Rs. 3970/4170 per quintal in Mumbai (Vashi) market. Nakaport delivery price also increased by Rs. 20.
Tender
The tender price of sugar remained mixed in Maharashtra while in Karnataka it remained high by Rs. 80 per quintal on the basis of demand. The pace of export shipment of sugar is expected to pick up.
Production
The data so far clearly indicates that the domestic production of sugar may decrease by 50-60 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 season as compared to the 2023-24 season. Although the supply and availability of sugar will remain normal this time due to the huge backlog stock, but its surplus stock will decrease significantly at the end of the current marketing season. Export of 110 lakh tonnes will also affect the stock of sugar. In view of this, the price of sugar is expected to remain strong at a high level with limited fluctuations in the coming time as well.
