Sugar prices fluctuate according to demand and supply
New Delhi. On the basis of demand and supply, fluctuations were recorded in the mill delivery price and spot market price of sugar during the week of 6-12 September.
Mill Delivery Price
Its mill delivery price increased by Rs 10 per quintal in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Rs 80 in Punjab, Rs 60 in Bihar, Rs 35 in western Uttar Pradesh and Rs 20 per quintal in Gujarat.
Quota
Although the Union Food Ministry has issued a free sale quota of 23.50 lakh tonnes of sugar for the month of September, which is 1 lakh tonne more than the August quota of 22.50 lakh tonnes and is equal to the September 2024 quota of 23.50 lakh tonnes, but no significant negative impact of this increased quota is being seen on the price of sugar.
Spot Price
A mixed trend was seen in the spot market price of sugar. In Delhi, its price jumped by Rs 150 to Rs 4300/4450 per quintal, while in Indore it remained stable at Rs 4220/4320 per quintal, but in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, it fell by Rs 20 to Rs 4260/4325 per quintal.
Mumbai
In Mumbai (Vashi) market, the spot price of sugar remained stable at Rs 3980/4180 per quintal and no change was seen in Naka Port delivery price at Rs 3930/4130. On the other hand, the spot price of sugar in Kolkata increased by Rs 20-30 to Rs 4400/4440 per quintal. Good demand is being seen for sugar there.
Tender
The tender price of sugar improved to Rs 3855/3950 per quintal in Karnataka, but fell slightly to Rs 3870/3960 per quintal in Maharashtra.
Crushing / Production
The new marketing season for crushing sugarcane and production of sugar is going to start from next month, while the festival of Dussehra (Durga Puja) and Diwali is also in October. Millers are not in much hurry to sell the quota of the current month.
Monsoon
However, there are signs of improvement in the demand of sugar due to the decrease in the activity of monsoon and a slight increase in temperature. After the end of Pitru Paksha on 21st September, when Navratri begins from 22nd September, there may be some improvement in the demand and price of sugar.
