Wheat market softens due to pressure of government policy
New Delhi. The effect of the reduction in the perceptible quantity under the stock limit of wheat by the Central Government is now slowly being seen on the market. Due to the off or lean season of supply and the ongoing festival season, there should have been an atmosphere of ups and downs in the prices of wheat and its value added products at this time because the government has also not yet started the clearance sale of its wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS), but on the contrary, some pressure was seen on the market during the week of 6-12 September.
Price
During the week under review, the price of wheat slipped by Rs 5 in Delhi to Rs 2855/2865 per quintal, fell by Rs 150 in Ujjain to Rs 2575/2950 per quintal and fell by Rs 50 in Khandwa to Rs 2600/2850 per quintal. The market was seen to be soft in Rajasthan. There, the price of wheat fell by Rs 20 in Kota to Rs 2585/2680 per quintal and by Rs 80 in Bundi to Rs 2580/2610 per quintal.
Uttar Pradesh
Amid limited trading in the mandis of Uttar Pradesh, the price of wheat witnessed some fluctuations. In one or two mandis of Madhya Pradesh, the price of wheat also improved by Rs 10-20 per quintal. On the other hand, the price of wheat in Jalna mandi of Maharashtra fell by Rs 100 to Rs 2600/2700 per quintal.
Stock / Inflow
Although there is a good surplus stock of wheat in the central pool, the government is not in a hurry to release it in the market. It believes that there is normal arrival of wheat in the mandis and its price is also under control, so there is no need to start its sale from the central pool at the moment. This assessment is also correct to a large extent because the wholesale market price of wheat is running much lower this time compared to last year.
Sowing
After the sowing of Kharif crops is over, now the sowing campaign of Rabi crops is going to start from next month. Everyone's attention is focused on the minimum support price of wheat, which can be announced in the next few days.
Domestic production
According to government data, domestic production of wheat increased to a new record level of 1170 lakh tonnes in the Rabi season of 2024-25.
