The USDA has estimated that Turkey's wheat production for the 2024-25 season will be 190 lakh tons, a decrease from 210 lakh tons last year, primarily due to dry and hot weather affecting yields.
Despite the reduced production, Turkey’s food security should remain stable due to high carryover stocks. Wheat production is expected to come from a sowing area of 72.50 lakh hectares, with an average yield rate of 2.62 tons per hectare.
Turkey’s total wheat availability for the 2024-25 season is projected at 298.03 lakh tons, with 53 lakh tons from previous stocks, 190 lakh tons from local production, and potential imports of 55 lakh tons.
About 70 lakh tons will be exported, and 200 lakh tons will be used domestically, leaving a surplus of 28.03 lakh tons at the end of the season.
Turkey continues to import wheat, primarily from countries like Russia and Ukraine, not for direct consumption but for processing into value-added products like flour and maida.
These products are then re-exported to neighboring countries in Asia and Africa. Wheat imports peaked in the 2022-23 season at 12.5 million tons but are expected to decrease to 5.5 million tons in the 2024-25 season.
