Bengaluru: Accepting a proposal submitted by the Karnataka government, the Union Ministry of Agriculture has granted approval for the procurement of 9,023 tons of sunflower from farmers in the state under the Price Support Scheme for the Rabi 2026 season.
This initiative will provide relief to the farmers. The total value of this 9,023-ton consignment of sunflower, procured at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), amounts to over ₹69.66 crore. Following this approval from the Centre, farmers in Karnataka will no longer be compelled to sell their produce in the open market at distress prices.
The Ministry of Agriculture has also announced a significant decision aimed at providing relief to gram (chana) growers in Maharashtra. In that state, not only has the procurement target for gram at MSP been increased, but the deadline for the process has also been extended by 30 days. Under this new decision, 819,882 tons of gram can now be procured from farmers in Maharashtra at MSP, and this procurement drive will continue until May 29, 2026.
The total value of this 819,882-ton quantity of gram, procured at the Minimum Support Price, exceeds ₹4,816.80 crore. In several agricultural markets (mandis) across Maharashtra, the market price of gram has dropped below the Minimum Support Price (₹5,875 per quintal), resulting in financial losses for the farmers.
