Apprehensions of Declining Sugar Production in the Upcoming Season

Pune. Due to the active phase of the El Niño weather cycle, if rainfall across the country is deficient or absent during the Southwest Monsoon season (June–September), the sugarcane crop could suffer damage. Experts warn that any decline in sugarcane yields will have a direct impact on sugar production.

A matter of concern is that the Meteorological Department has also confirmed that the monsoon is expected to be weak this year.

It will be necessary to keep a close watch on both the distribution and the timing of rainfall. Although domestic sugar production during the 2025–26 season has increased compared to 2024–25, the growth did not meet expectations.

The new sugarcane crushing season for 2026–27 is set to formally commence in October. The status of the sowing area will become clear during July and August. The sugar industry is currently not in a position to offer definitive comments, and the government, too, remains in a state of uncertainty.
