The Union Agriculture Ministry has approved the purchase of 9,66,575 tonnes of tur (pigeon pea) from farmers in various states at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). This includes:
- Uttar Pradesh: 3,95,170 tonnes
- Karnataka: 3,06,150 tonnes
- Telangana: 1,69,140 tonnes
- Andhra Pradesh: 95,620 tonnes
- Haryana: 495 tonnes
While tur is also produced in significant quantities in states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, the purchase quantity has not yet been determined for these states. Maharashtra, which is the second-largest producer of tur after Karnataka, has not had a purchase quantity fixed yet, despite its major role in production. This is seen as surprising, especially with the possibility of substantial crop damage in Karnataka's Kalaburagi district, a key producer area.
The Central MSP for tur has been set at Rs 7,550 per quintal, though the market price has sharply declined recently. There are also reports of falling tur prices in exporting countries, which might further affect market dynamics.
The government procurement period for tur in Haryana is from December 1 to 31, 2024, while other states will determine their purchase limits as per local conditions. The new consignment of tur has already begun arriving in major producing states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
