Erode. Recently, a team of traders from major business centers of the country went to a recognized warehouse in Nizamabad and physically verified it after receiving news of poor quality turmeric stock being stored there.
The team found that 2000 tonnes of turmeric stock is present in that warehouse recognized by NCDEX, whose quality is very poor but its packing has a label of Nizamabad origin and it was allowed to be stored in the warehouse without any investigation. This poor quality turmeric is to be used for giving delivery under futures trading.
Since its price is very low, the futures price of turmeric is getting affected by this, due to which traders dealing in good quality product are likely to suffer huge financial losses.
Erode Turmeric Merchants Association has sent a letter to SEBI, NCDEX and other concerned parties including the Union Ministry of Commerce, requesting to immediately remove this 2000 tonnes of poor quality turmeric stock stored in the Nizamabad warehouse and said that this turmeric with fake tags should not be allowed to enter the market under any circumstances.
The association has alleged that a select group of traders brought poor quality turmeric from Assam, Duggirala and Marathwada divisions and declared it to be of Nizamabad origin and then stored it in the Nizamabad warehouse which is recognized by NCDEX to give delivery under futures contract.
In protest against this poor quality turmeric stock, turmeric traders in some other districts of Maharashtra including Hingoli, Sangli, Basmat, Nanded and Washim have either closed the market or threatened to close it. The association has also said that the quality of turmeric should be thoroughly checked before storing it in the warehouse.
