Vancouver. Canada, the leading producer and exporter of lentils and peas, is busy harvesting the new crop but its global demand remains weak. Earlier, in the 2024-25 marketing season, there was a good export of lentils from there but the shipment of peas remained weak.

According to official data, Canada exported 79,121 tonnes of lentils in June 2025, which declined to 62,671 tonnes in July 2025. Despite this, the total export of lentils from there increased to 18,35,224 tonnes during the entire marketing season (August-July) of 2024-25,

which was more than the total shipment of 16,83,525 tonnes in the marketing season of 2023-24 but much less than the gross export of 22,23,327 tonnes in the season of 2022-23. In July 2025, the highest 29,942 tonnes of lentils were exported from Canada to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 4588 tonnes to Colombia and 4486 tonnes to the US, while the remaining goods were shipped to other countries.

As far as peas are concerned, its export from Canada fell from 52,593 tonnes in June to 35,434 tonnes in July. In July, 12,134 tonnes of peas were exported to China, 10,816 tonnes to the US and 1722 tonnes to the Philippines.

India has dropped out of the list of top buyers of Canadian peas, whereas till a few months ago it was the largest importer country.

According to the available data, during the entire marketing season of 2024-25 i.e. from August 2024 to July 2025, the total export of peas from Canada could reach only 21,83,301 tonnes, which was much less than the gross shipment of 24,05,939 tonnes in the 2023-24 season and the export of 25,71,765 tonnes in the 2022-23 season.

Earlier a huge quantity of Canadian peas was being imported in India, but later its pace decreased considerably. The new marketing season of peas and lentils has started in Canada from August 2025, but the pace of export shipment of new goods is seen to be very slow.
