Regina. With better margins for farmers and the expectation of rotational benefits, there has been a good increase in the pea sowing area in Canada this year and its yield rate is expected to increase due to favorable weather conditions for the crop.

In some places in the southern part of Saskatchewan, Canada's most prominent agricultural producing province, sporadic harvesting of the new crop has started, while it may take two to three weeks to pick up pace.

According to a leading analyst Deepak Rawat, the gross pea production in Canada is expected to increase by 15 percent to 3.5 million tonnes in the current season of 2025 as compared to the year 2024,

which is the highest in the last five years. Under this, the production of yellow peas is expected to increase by 15 percent to 27.50 lakh tons, green peas by 20 percent to 5 lakh tons and the production of other varieties and categories of peas is expected to jump by 44 percent to 1.75 lakh tons.

The prices of yellow peas are under pressure due to the possibility of increased production in Canada. Its price has fallen by more than 12 percent in the last two months.

Its price will depend on many factors in the near future and medium term. It will be necessary to see how much is produced in Russia. At present, the production of yellow peas is estimated to be between 42.50 to 47.50 lakh tons, the average of which is 45 lakh tons.

On the other hand, due to dry weather in America, the production rate and yield of peas is likely to be weak, due to which its import may be needed there to meet the demand for various purposes.

Peas can be imported duty free under the valid license available in China. Apart from this, purchases by traditional importing countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Turkey will also affect the prices of Canadian yellow peas.

The deadline for duty-free import of yellow peas in India has been extended till 31 March 2026, so Canada has high expectations from India. Although the pace of import of yellow peas in India has been slow for the last few months, but its pace may increase in the coming months.
