Canada's Total Kabuli Chickpea Stock Projected to Reach 650,000 Tonnes

Ottawa: Although Canada's Kabuli chickpea production is expected to drop by over 100,000 tonnes this year due to adverse weather and reduced acreage, total availability is projected to rise to 650,000 tonnes, driven by a substantial carryover stock of 150,000 tonnes.

Chickpea stocks in Canada had reached a new record high following excellent production in the 2025-26 season, and total availability is expected to be even higher in the 2026-27 season due to the massive carryover stock. Meanwhile, production in the US is likely to fall by 27 percent to 225,000 tonnes, potentially leading to increased imports there. The US is the largest buyer of Canadian Kabuli chickpeas, though relations between the two countries are currently strained.

Demand for Canadian Kabuli chickpeas remains satisfactory in other importing nations. In Pakistan, chickpea imports rose to nearly 472,000 tonnes during the first seven months of 2026; however, stocks in Australia—the top supplier—have now dwindled, and production there is also expected to decline. Disruptions in shipments from Russia are expected to benefit Canada. Pakistan may place particular emphasis on increasing imports of small-seeded Kabuli chickpeas from Canada.
