Change in the stock of major agricultural products in Canada compared to last year

Ottawa. Canada produces and exports large quantities of agricultural commodities such as wheat, canola, lentils, and peas. The stock levels of these products fluctuate based on production and consumption patterns.
According to data from Statistics Canada (Stats Can), by the end of March 2025, the stock of lentils increased to 10.50 lakh tonnes from 8 lakh tonnes in March 2024, while the stock of peas rose from 9.60 lakh tonnes to 13.60 lakh tonnes. This growth was supported by a significant increase in production during the 2024-25 season compared to the previous year.
Among grain crops, the total wheat stock slightly declined from 156 lakh tonnes in March 2024 to 154.20 lakh tonnes in March 2025.
Within this, durum wheat stock rose from 19.50 lakh tonnes to 20 lakh tonnes, but non-durum (general category) wheat stock decreased from 136.50 lakh tonnes to 134.20 lakh tonnes. Barley stocks remained unchanged at 30.70 lakh tonnes.
However, maize stock registered a sharp drop of over 10 lakh tonnes, falling from 82.70 lakh tonnes to 72 lakh tonnes. Oats stock also declined by 2 lakh tonnes, from 14.80 lakh tonnes to 12.80 lakh tonnes.
In the oilseed category, canola (rapeseed) stock fell sharply from 95.80 lakh tonnes in March 2024 to 58.70 lakh tonnes in March 2025. Linseed stock decreased from 3.20 lakh tonnes to 2.50 lakh tonnes.
Meanwhile, soybean stock increased from 21.60 lakh tonnes to 23.90 lakh tonnes, and rye stock also improved from 1.60 lakh tonnes to 2.50 lakh tonnes.
At the end of December 2024, Canada’s agricultural stock included 14.90 lakh tonnes of lentils, 17.10 lakh tonnes of peas, 3.20 lakh tonnes of rye, 113.50 lakh tonnes of canola, 41.20 lakh tonnes of soybean, 241.10 lakh tonnes of wheat, 49.60 lakh tonnes of barley,
113.20 lakh tonnes of maize, 3.30 lakh tonnes of linseed, and 21.90 lakh tonnes of oats. These figures represent stocks held by both farmers and the commercial sector.
