Mumbai: A leading commodity exchange that operates futures trading in various commodities is now exploring the possibility of reintroducing futures contracts in black pepper.

If approved by the regulatory body, the exchange could launch futures trading in black pepper in 2026.

It is noteworthy that futures trading in black pepper was previously conducted but was later suspended due to some legal and regulatory issues.

A senior official of the exchange stated that India is among the leading producers, consumers, and exporters of black pepper in the world, but it is not able to influence global market prices.

If the legal issues are resolved, an attempt will be made to restart futures trading. This will ensure better prices for producers and provide a good incentive to increase the production of this important commodity.

Currently, India exports black pepper on one hand, while on the other hand, it also imports large quantities from abroad.

Indian black pepper is of good quality, and despite its high price, it maintains strong demand in the global market. Many countries highly value Indian black pepper.

The exchange stated that the decision to reintroduce futures trading in black pepper will be made only after a thorough assessment of its profitability and viability in the current market environment.

It will be necessary to see whether traders and investors show enthusiasm for these contracts, as this will determine the success of the trading. The arrival of new black pepper crops has already begun in the country.
