Bhatinda. The arrival of new cotton supplies has already begun in the three major producing states of northern India—Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab—but overall production is expected to increase slightly.
According to preliminary estimates, cotton production in Punjab during the 2025-26 season is expected to increase from 1.52 lakh bales to 1.96 lakh bales, and in Rajasthan from 19.25 lakh bales to 20.36 lakh bales, compared to the 2024-25 season.
Production in Haryana is expected to decline from 7.68 lakh bales to 6.38 lakh bales. Cotton production in the upper part of Rajasthan (Ganganagar Circle) is expected to increase from 10.35 lakh bales last year to 12.44 lakh bales this year,
while production in the lower region is expected to decline from 8.90 lakh bales to 7.92 lakh bales. Thus, gross cotton production in the entire northern region is projected to improve from 28.45 lakh bales in the 2024-25 season to 28.70 lakh bales in the current 2025-26 season. Each bale weighs 170 kg.
Early sowing of cotton occurs in these northern states, typically beginning on April 15-20 and completing by May 15-20. Consequently, the arrival of the new crop also begins early.
This time, all three states faced severe floods, but the cotton crop was not significantly damaged, and production is expected to improve.
