The export performance of lentils and chickpeas from Canada showed a notable decline in January 2025, according to data from StatsCan. Lentil exports fell sharply by 51% from 2,62,058 tonnes in December 2024 to just 1,29,119 tonnes in January 2025.
This decline is attributed to weak demand from India, which, for the first time in a long while, dropped out of the list of the top three importing countries of Canadian lentils.
In January, Bangladesh emerged as the largest importer, purchasing 25,686 tonnes of Canadian lentils, followed by the United Arab Emirates with 20,190 tonnes and Turkey with 9,833 tonnes.
Despite this drop in January exports, the overall export of lentils from Canada for the first half of the 2024-2025 marketing season (August 2024 to January 2025) increased by 26% compared to the same period in the previous year, reaching 12,21,145 tonnes, up from 9,68,100 tonnes in 2023-24.
For the entire 2023-24 marketing season, Canada exported 16,82,509 tonnes of lentils, a decline from the 22,23,327 tonnes exported in 2022-23.
As for Kabuli chickpeas, their export dropped by 4% from 20,056 tonnes in December 2024 to 17,964 tonnes in January 2025.
The United States was the largest importer of Canadian Kabuli chana, followed by Turkey and Italy.
The total export of Kabuli chana for the August 2024 to January 2025 period fell by 22% to 91,103 tonnes, compared to 1,17,505 tonnes in the same period the previous year
