The distribution of fine-grade rice in Telangana is set to begin in January 2025, benefiting approximately 2.81 crore beneficiaries. This initiative is part of the state's ongoing efforts to support farmers and ensure smooth rice distribution. The Commissioner of the Civil Supplies Department, who shared this information, also highlighted the government's achievements and measures to address past inefficiencies in the procurement system.
Key highlights of the current situation include:
Paddy Purchase: So far, Telangana has procured 13.13 lakh tonnes of paddy in the current season, with an expenditure of Rs 3,045.76 crore. This includes both general category paddy (10.11 lakh tonnes) and fine variety paddy (3.02 lakh tonnes).
Farmer Bonus: A bonus of Rs 9.21 crore has been paid to farmers, though some payments were delayed due to technical issues. By November 23, 90% of farmers will have received their bonus for fan variety paddy.
Reforms and Debt Reduction: In response to inefficiencies in the old procurement policies, the Telangana government has implemented reforms based on recommendations from a Cabinet Sub-Committee. The state has increased the number of paddy purchase centers to 8,066, a new record. As a result, the corporation’s debt, which was Rs 58,623 crore under the old system, has been reduced by Rs 11,608.40 crore to Rs 47,014.68 crore.
Bank Guarantee System: A new bank guarantee system is being introduced to ensure proper paddy procurement. This system will require guarantees, which will be returned once the milled rice is provided, aiming to eliminate flaws in the procurement process.
These steps are expected to enhance the efficiency of the paddy procurement system and benefit both farmers and consumers, with Telangana maintaining its position as a major contributor of rice to the central pool.
