Environment of stability in sugar market as production season gains momentum

The sugar market is experiencing a stable environment as the production season gains momentum. The Union Food Ministry has announced a free sale quota of 22 lakh tonnes for December, consistent with November's quota, but lower than the same period in 2023.

The sugarcane crushing season began in October, with activity accelerating in mid-November. The top sugar-producing states—Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka—are now actively crushing sugarcane, while other states like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and more are also contributing to the production.

However, sugarcane production is expected to be lower this year, with an increased focus on ethanol production, which may reduce the amount of sugar produced.

Despite this, the large stock left over from the previous season ensures a smooth supply and availability in the domestic market.

Since commercial sugar exports have been banned for over a year, almost all the sugar produced will be used domestically.

With the end of the festive season, domestic demand for sugar has returned to normal levels. Even during the wedding and festival season, there hasn't been a significant surge in consumption, partly due to the availability of jaggery.

The mild winter and weaker industrial demand have also contributed to a decrease in sugar consumption. As a result, sugar prices are expected to remain relatively stable, with slight fluctuations, offering some relief to consumers during the colder months.
