Experts worried over plan to cut paddy area by 50 lakh hectares

Chandigarh. Agricultural experts have raised serious concerns about the government's plan to reduce the paddy cultivation area by 50 lakh hectares and replace it with pulses and oilseeds.
They warn that this shift could lead to a significant drop in paddy and rice production, while the anticipated increase in pulses and oilseeds may not be achieved.
According to experts, a decline in rice production could negatively impact exports and pose a risk to national food security. Although the current rice stock is substantial and domestic availability remains stable, a future shortfall in production could lead to supply issues.
The government, however, argues that the move is aimed at producing 100 lakh tonnes of pulses and oilseeds in the same area to promote self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imports. It believes that expanding the use of high-yielding paddy varieties could help maintain overall rice production levels.
Experts caution that unless farmers are provided with reliable seeds, proper support, and training in modern agricultural techniques, the plan could backfire.
One expert noted that without adequate preparation and support for farmers, the initiative may result in reduced rice production and price increases, without achieving the desired boost in pulses and oilseeds output.
Farmers’ deep-rooted preference for paddy is another challenge, and the government may need to offer additional incentives to encourage a shift to alternative crops. The upcoming Kharif season will be crucial in determining the success or failure of this ambitious plan.
