Basmati Rice Exports to U.S. May Face Minor Impact Due to Import Duty
New Delhi: The United States has announced import duties on several products from India and other countries, including a 26% duty on Indian Basmati rice. While this may raise the cost of importing Indian rice into the U.S., exporters believe the impact will be limited.
Encouragingly, Pakistan’s Basmati rice will face a higher 29% duty, giving India a competitive edge. India dominates the global Basmati export market with a 70–75% share, while Pakistan supplies the rest.
Exporters noted that while the new U.S. tariff could pose short-term challenges, it is unlikely to significantly disrupt trade.
In fact, higher duties on other rice-exporting nations—such as 46% on Vietnamese, 37% on Thai, and 34% on Chinese rice—may strengthen India’s position in the U.S. market.
With proper strategy and pricing, India is expected to maintain stable exports of Basmati rice to the U.S.
