The sowing of fenugreek in key producing states, such as Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, is nearing completion.
Sources indicate that Gujarat is expected to see a 15-20% increase in sowing compared to last year. On the other hand, sowing in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan is expected to remain consistent with the previous year.
In 2023, fenugreek was sown across 18,000 hectares in Gujarat, 67,000-68,000 hectares in Madhya Pradesh, and 42,000-43,000 hectares in Rajasthan, with a total sowing area of about 1.30 lakh hectares across the country.
However, fenugreek production in the current season has declined due to reduced sowing areas. Estimates suggest that the production will be around 17-18 lakh quintals, compared to 18-19 lakh quintals in 2023.
This reduction in production has led to a decrease in stock levels. In 2023, the stock was about 7-8 lakh bags, which has now decreased to 5-6 lakh bags in 2024. For 2025, stock is projected to fall further to 3-4 lakh bags.
Despite the weaker production, exports of fenugreek have surged. In the first half of 2024 (April-September), exports increased by 53%, reaching 21,377.25 tonnes, compared to 13,990.64 tonnes in the same period of 2023.
However, local trade remains slow, and there is currently limited export demand, preventing any significant rise in prices.
Presently, the price of average quality fenugreek in mandis (markets) is between Rs 55-58 per kg. The market is expected to experience minor fluctuations, with prices moving by 2-3 rupees up or down in the near future.
