New Delhi. In a move aimed at improving ease of doing business and preventing misuse of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), the Central Government has clearly defined the term 'Proof of Origin' for import-export operations.
While earlier it was enough to present a Certificate of Origin (COO), now additional proof is required to avail customs duty exemptions.
According to a recent circular by the Revenue Department under the Union Finance Ministry, 'Proof of Origin' refers to a certificate or declaration that complies with the rules of the relevant trade agreement and confirms that the product meets the origin requirements of the exporting country.
For importers, this means they must provide proper documentation when seeking duty exemptions on products from FTA partner nations.
For Indian exporters, submitting a valid Certificate of Origin at designated ports in importing countries is mandatory to benefit from duty concessions under trade treaties.
The government hopes this clarification will enhance transparency, ensure compliance, and boost trade authenticity in international markets.
