New Delhi. Food Corporation of India (FCI) and its associated state agencies have procured a total of 301.06 lakh tonnes of wheat for the central pool till June 23 this year.
This accounts for 90.5 percent of the procurement target of 332.70 lakh tonnes set for the entire Rabi marketing season.
By comparison, the total wheat procurement was 266 lakh tonnes in 2024, 262 lakh tonnes in 2023, and 188 lakh tonnes in 2022. Rajasthan was the only state this year where procurement exceeded the target.
According to the available data, the highest procurement was in Punjab at 119.19 lakh tonnes, followed by 77.71 lakh tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, 72.34 lakh tonnes in Haryana, 21.19 lakh tonnes in Rajasthan, and 10.26 lakh tonnes in Uttar Pradesh. Smaller quantities were also procured in Bihar, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh.
In Rajasthan, the target was 20 lakh tonnes, but actual procurement reached 21.19 lakh tonnes — 6 percent above target. Farmers there received a bonus of Rs 150 per quintal over the minimum support price (MSP).
In Madhya Pradesh, a bonus of Rs 175 per quintal was offered. Initially, the procurement target in Madhya Pradesh was 60 lakh tonnes, later revised to 70 lakh tonnes, and then to 80 lakh tonnes as arrivals increased. However, actual procurement fell slightly short of this final revised target.
In Uttar Pradesh, only 10.26 lakh tonnes of wheat was procured against the target of 30 lakh tonnes, but this still marked a record level for the state — about one lakh tonnes more than last year's purchase of 9.31 lakh tonnes.
In Punjab, private traders and flour millers were notably active and successful in procuring wheat this season.
