Government purchase of more than 4.20 lakh tonnes of millet in Haryana

The Central Government's decision to purchase more than 4.20 lakh tonnes of millet in Haryana highlights the growing importance of supporting farmers amidst fluctuating market conditions.
The government has increased the minimum support price (MSP) of millet by 5% to Rs 2,625 per quintal, which is a move aimed at providing better returns to farmers.
However, the market price in Haryana has been much lower than the MSP, leading to the government's intervention under the price support scheme to directly purchase millet from farmers.
By November 13, 2024, the government had purchased 4,20,263 tonnes of millet in Haryana alone, helping farmers secure a fair price for their produce.
In addition, 17,956 tonnes have been procured in Uttar Pradesh, bringing the total quantity of millet purchased to 4,38,219 tonnes.
This direct purchase mechanism is providing significant relief to farmers, especially since the market prices are not in line with the MSP.
While the procurement is progressing in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, other major millet-producing states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan have not yet started their purchases.
However, if millet prices continue to fall in these states, the government may extend the price support scheme there as well.
Another point of concern is the reduction in millet sowing area this year—from 70.94 lakh hectares in 2023 to 69.91 lakh hectares in 2024.
The government's production estimate for millet has also decreased from 96.63 lakh tonnes to 93.75 lakh tonnes, reflecting the challenges faced by the sector.
This makes the government's support measures even more crucial for ensuring that millet farmers remain financially stable.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to encourage the cultivation of millets, which are considered nutritious and climate-resilient crops, and to promote their consumption as part of the National Millets Mission.
