New Delhi: Government procurement of wheat has crossed 31 lakh tonnes so far in the current Rabi marketing season, with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana leading the way. This is a significant increase from 17 lakh tonnes procured during the same period last year.
According to the Union Food Ministry, Madhya Pradesh alone has contributed 27 lakh tonnes, more than double compared to last year.
The state is offering a bonus of Rs. 175 per quintal over the MSP of Rs. 2425, which has encouraged higher participation.
Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have procured 2.03 lakh tonnes and 1.42 lakh tonnes respectively, with Rajasthan also offering a Rs. 150 bonus.
Procurement in Punjab and Haryana, which started from April 1, is expected to pick up pace post Baisakhi. Till April 12, Punjab had procured 2909 tonnes, and Haryana 15,204 tonnes.
The government aims to purchase 313 lakh tonnes of wheat this season, and procurement is now underway across all major producing states.
