Kochi. The Kerala government has started efforts to control the uncontrollable increase in the price of coconut oil in the state.

The government has assured that it will bring down the price of coconut oil during the upcoming Onam festival season. It is worth mentioning that coconut oil is used on a large scale as edible oil in Kerala.

The Food and Civil Supplies Minister and the Industry Minister of Kerala gave the above assurance after meeting with more than 60 coconut oil traders of the state.

The rapidly growing coconut oil suppliers are retailing branded coconut oil through their outlets and for this, tenders are being invited from traders for regular supply of oil. Traders are being encouraged to participate in this tender.

After the meeting, the ministers said that the prices will be paid to those who will be successful in getting the bid within 15 days.

When the price of coconut oil sold through Supplyco will come down, then the prices in the retail market will also be naturally affected and an atmosphere of softness will be created there.

The unanimous opinion of the traders who participated in the meeting was that the price of coconut oil should be controlled.

The ministers said that measures are being explored to reduce the prices of coconut oil while ensuring a fair and profitable price of the product to the producers (farmers).

The ministers ruled out the possibility of sourcing it from other markets and said that it may have a long-term impact.

Traders say that first of all the government agency - Kerala will have to reduce the price of its coconut oil, which is being sold at the rate of Rs 529 per kg, whereas the coconut oil of the brand available in the open market is available at Rs 450 per kg.
