Green lentil area expected to increase and red lentil area expected to remain stable in Canada

Saskatoon. After the lentil sowing concluded at nearly equal levels in both top-producing provinces of Western Canada—Saskatchewan and Alberta—attention has now shifted to crop progress.

The government agency Stats Can is set to release its report today, June 27, which will include estimated sowing data for lentils and other major crops.

Broadly, the production area for green lentils in Canada has increased compared to last year, while the sowing area for red lentils is expected to remain largely unchanged.

Recent rainfall in several parts of Saskatchewan, the most significant lentil-producing region, is expected to benefit the crop and has reduced uncertainty about average yields.

However, there is also increased risk of damage from pests and diseases. Additionally, water accumulation in fields may affect lentil quality.

Prices in Saskatchewan’s lentil markets have remained largely stable. According to trade analysts, weather conditions have not had a major impact on the market so far, but this could change.

If weather remains favorable, lentil prices may stay stable or soften. However, localized heavy rain or drought could lead to a price increase.

Currently, thick green lentils are priced at 43–45 cents per pound, while new crop prices are around 38–40 cents. Small green lentils are trading at 35–37 cents per pound.

Red lentil trade has slowed significantly, and prices have softened slightly in recent weeks to around 28–30 cents per pound.

According to analysts, unless a major weather or supply factor emerges in Canada or Australia, lentil prices are unlikely to fluctuate sharply.

The preparation for the new pea crop in Canada will begin in August–September, followed by Australia. India, which imports large quantities of lentils from both countries, plays a key role in global price trends.

However, the pace of Indian lentil imports has recently slowed due to the 10 percent import duty imposed from April 1, 2025.
