Heavy rain in Karnataka and Kerala due to Cyclone Fengal

Cyclone Fengal has caused significant disruption in parts of India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala.

After initially causing heavy damage as a strong storm in the earlier phases, it weakened into a depression as it moved towards Karnataka and Kerala. Although the wind speed reduced, it still brought heavy rainfall, especially in the southern states.

The cyclone's impact on Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry was severe, with winds reaching 80-90 km/h and intense rainfall leading to flooding in low-lying areas.

This disrupted life and negatively affected agricultural activities, especially for Rabi crops, as the floods hindered sowing and growth.

The Tamil Nadu government has requested Rs 2,000 crore from the central government to help with the aftermath, covering the damages caused by the storm and the subsequent flooding.

In Karnataka and Kerala, while the intensity of the cyclone was weaker, the rains it brought may be beneficial for Rabi crops, which require adequate rainfall.

However, there were concerns about potential damage to spice crops like pepper in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and the cyclone delayed the harvesting process in Karnataka.

Despite the temporary disruption, experts believe that the continued north-east monsoon could lead to beneficial rainfall patterns for agriculture in the future.
