Thiruvananthapuram. The southwest monsoon is active in various states of the country and regular rainfall is also continuing. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, which may lead to floods in some places. Flood crisis is already present in three districts of Orissa.
In many parts of Kerala, torrential rains accompanied by strong winds have caused damage to agricultural and plantation crops. Apart from this, the water level in rivers, reservoirs and dams has also increased a lot.
Due to the flow of strong winds, trees are falling, affecting traffic and disrupting power supply. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rains in Idukki, Kannur and Kasargod districts. It is known that small cardamom and betel nut are produced on a large scale in these districts.
The season of plucking and preparation of small cardamom has started and if the weather remains bad, the crop may get damaged. Yellow alert for rain has been issued in six other districts of Kerala.
In Kerala's Wayanad district, the gate of Banasura Sagar Dam had to be opened due to excessive rise in water level, due to which there was severe flood in its catchment area and fields and gardens got submerged.
On the other hand, the gate of Muziyar reservoir in Pathanamthitta district was also opened after the water level crossed the danger mark. Strong winds and torrential rains have caused more damage in southern Kerala. Ernakulam, Pallikal and Kollam districts have also been affected a lot.
Heavy rains have been predicted in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan of western India, due to which there is a possibility of benefit of Kharif crops in some areas and damage in some other areas.
The rain situation in Rajasthan is being monitored closely as heavy rainfall has already occurred there and in the low lying areas of some districts, the fields are still flooded or the moisture level is found to be more than required.
