Heavy Rains Threaten 20 Lakh Acres of Kharif Crops in Maharashtra

Mumbai. Kharif crops are feared to be damaged in more than 20 lakh acres of land due to extremely heavy rains for more than 10 days in various parts of the western state of the country - Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra government has directed to immediately start Panchnama (survey) in the affected areas and initiate relief measures for the farmers.

The Agriculture Minister of Maharashtra has admitted that due to torrential rains in the month of August, standing crops in 20.12 lakh acres in 19 districts of the state have been damaged.

Crops have been damaged in all parts of the state - Konkan, Western Maharashtra, North Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha.

From August 9, a period of heavy rains started in various areas of the state, which has adversely affected Kharif crops in 187 talukas and 654 health circles.

According to the Agriculture Minister, every affected farmer will be given government assistance and no farmer will be deprived of it. The government stands firmly with him and he should not lose hope. He will be provided adequate compensation.

Nanded is also among the districts most affected by torrential rains, waterlogging and floods, where Kharif crops are reported to have been destroyed in more than 2.86 lakh hectares of area due to the flood of debris caused by cloudburst.

Apart from this, Kharif crops have been destroyed in 1.65 lakh hectares in Washim district, 81 thousand hectares in Yavatmal, 75 thousand hectares in Buldhana, 44 thousand in Akola, 42 thousand in Solapur, 40 thousand in Hingoli, 29 thousand in Parbhani, 13 thousand in Amravati and 12 thousand hectares in Jalgaon district due to natural disasters.

According to the Agriculture Minister, this is an initial estimate of the damage to the crops, while its detailed assessment is still going on.

An order has been issued to provide relief and compensation to the farmers at the right time. The heavy rainfall has damaged the main Kharif crops as well as vegetable crops. Apart from this, damage to the crops of jowar, sugarcane, onion, millets and turmeric is also being reported.
