New Delhi. Malawi, a country located in the south-eastern part of the African continent, is currently facing a severe drought crisis, due to which crops have been damaged on a large scale and a serious food crisis has arisen.
In view of this, the Government of India has sent 1000 tonnes of rice to Malawi as humanitarian food aid. It is known that a good amount of tur is imported to India from this African country.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India stands firmly with the people of Malawi in this hour of natural disaster.
Food grain production has been badly affected due to the outbreak of severe drought there due to the effect of El Nino weather cycle. Food aid of 1000 tonnes of rice has been dispatched from India.
It is noteworthy that in March 2024, the Government of Malawi declared a state of disaster in the country when a severe outbreak of drought had occurred in 23 out of 28 districts of the country.
Due to this, the condition of crops kept deteriorating and now the situation of supply and availability of food grains has become very complicated.
India has very good political and trade relations with Malawi and India has also signed a five-year agreement with this small African country for import of tur.
The Malawi government has started taking strict action against those who hoard and black market food grains at the local level.
