Impact of Rising Global Market Prices on Indian Cotton

Ahmedabad. Fluctuations in cotton prices are being observed in the international market. India has already permitted duty-free cotton imports until October 31, 2026, and importers are leveraging this to bring in large quantities. Consequently, cotton prices in the domestic market have generally remained firm.

Official data indicates that during the current peak season, the cotton cultivation area in the country reached 109.17 lakh hectares by September 4; this is 70,000 hectares less than the 109.87 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year. Since sowing has concluded in most regions, there is little scope for a significant increase in acreage moving forward, although sporadic sowing continues in some isolated areas.

Harvesting of early-sown cotton crops has commenced in certain states. While the crop condition is reported to be satisfactory, there are apprehensions regarding minor damage in some areas.

Early cotton cultivation (during April-May) takes place in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, leading to crop arrivals in September itself. Similarly, reports indicate the arrival of cotton in parts of states such as Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. The pace of supply is expected to increase in the coming period.
