India denies US allegations of rice dumping

New Delhi. India has categorically rejected the US allegation that it is dumping large stocks of rice in the American market. India says it primarily exports premium quality Basmati rice to the US, and the quantity is limited. American importers order only as much rice from India as is deemed necessary there.

According to the Central Commerce Secretary, more than 80 percent of the rice exported from India to the US is long-grain, high-value, premium quality aromatic rice.

This rice is significantly more expensive than non-Basmati rice. Only a small quantity of non-Basmati white (raw) rice is exported from India to the US. Therefore, the allegation of dumping Indian rice in the American market is completely baseless.

The Commerce Secretary stated that the Basmati rice that India exports to the US is a GI (Geographical Indication) product and is considerably more expensive than ordinary rice.

Prima facie, there is no case of dumping Indian rice there. Moreover, a hefty 50 percent tariff has already been imposed on Indian rice imports into the US.

The Commerce Secretary clarified that the US administration has not initiated any investigation into the alleged dumping of Indian rice, nor has any action been taken.

The US President had merely stated that if a case of rice dumping were to arise, the import duty could be further increased.

Indian exporters are somewhat disappointed by the high 50 percent import duty on rice in the US,

but they also say that it will not significantly affect India's overall rice exports because new markets can be explored as alternatives, and a vigorous search for these markets has already begun.
