India’s Pigeon Pea Imports: Sharp Rise Expected in April 2025, Estimated at 98,162 Tons
India's pigeon pea (Tuar) imports are expected to surge in April 2025, with estimated imports at 98,162.1 metric tons—an increase of around 36,184 tons compared to April 2024, when imports stood at 61,978 tons.
In the financial year 2024-25, India imported a total of 1.238 million tons of pigeon peas, while the figure for 2023-24 was 0.771 million tons. Earlier, India imported 0.895 million tons in 2022-23 and 0.840 million tons in 2021-22. The import volumes for 2020-21 and 2019-20 were 0.442 million and 0.449 million tons, respectively.
Due to declining domestic production in previous years and rising consumption, the government is using imports as a tool to stabilize domestic prices.
Exports from Myanmar have increased significantly, as the country recorded a bumper pigeon pea harvest of 0.35 million tons this year. Despite India’s own good harvest in 2025, imports have also risen, boosting overall availability in the domestic market.
Myanmar exporters are pushing to ship larger volumes before African crops begin arriving. Africa is expected to produce around 700,000 to 800,000 tons of pigeon peas.
Overall, market availability of pigeon peas remains healthy. However, after July, if seasonal and festive demand strengthens, a slight increase in prices could be seen.
