India’s sugar production drops 18% by 15 May 2025: NFCSF
According to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSF), India’s total sugar production in the 2023–24 season stood at 31.54 million metric tons (MMT), which has dropped to 25.74 MMT in the 2024–25 season. This marks a decline of approximately 5.8 MMT, or 18 percent.
Key reasons for the decline:
Decrease in sugarcane availability
Average sugar recovery rate has dropped from 10.10 percent to 9.30 percent
Total cane crushed also fell sharply — from 312.26 MMT to 276.78 MMT, a drop of 35.49 MMT
State-wise production data (in million tons):
Maharashtra: 8.1 (down by 2.93 from 11.02)
Uttar Pradesh: 9.28 (down by 1.09 from 10.37)
Karnataka: 4.04 (down by 1.1 from 5.14)
As of the end of April 2025, around 3 million tons of sugar has been diverted for ethanol production.
The sugar industry accounts for 45 percent of total ethanol supply so far this year.
With declining sugar production, there is a strong possibility of firm or bullish trends in the sugar market in the upcoming season.
