According to Monday’s Crop Progress report, 17% of the spring wheat crop has been planted, ahead of the 5-year average of 12%. Only Minnesota (MN) and Washington (WA) were behind the average. Wheat emergence is at 2%, matching the seasonal norm.
As of April 20, 15% of the U.S. winter wheat crop had reached the heading stage, which is 2 percentage points above normal.
However, crop quality declined — the good/excellent rating dropped by 2% to 45%, and the Brugler500 Index fell 4 points to 325.
State-specific ratings saw declines in:
Illinois (IL): -21 points
Colorado (CO): -13 points
South Dakota (SD): -11 points
Kansas (KS): -9 points
Oklahoma (OK): -7 points
Some states showed improvement:
Texas (TX): +14 points
Missouri (MO) and Montana (MT): +12 points each
According to EU Commission data, the EU imported 16.76 million metric tons (MMT) of soft wheat from July 1 to April 20, significantly higher than last year’s 14.9 MMT.
