New Delhi. After evaluating the demand and supply scenario for the current 2024-25 marketing season, the Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), the apex body of private sugar mills, has estimated that the sugar industry will have a surplus stock of 53 lakh tonnes at the end of the season on 30 September 2025.
This stock will be sufficient to meet the domestic requirement for the initial two months of the next marketing season (2025-26).
According to ISMA, the industry began the 2024-25 season with a significant carryover stock of 80 lakh tonnes. During the season, sugar production is expected to reach 262 lakh tonnes, raising the total availability to 342 lakh tonnes.
Out of this, 280 lakh tonnes are estimated to be consumed domestically and 9 lakh tonnes exported, leaving a closing stock of 53 lakh tonnes.
This marks a decline of 27 lakh tonnes compared to the opening stock, but ISMA has stated that there is no cause for concern as production is expected to improve in the next season.
The association further noted that the sugarcane crushing and sugar production campaign is nearly complete. Out of 535 operational sugar mills across the country, 533 mills have already shut down operations. Only two units in Tamil Nadu are still crushing sugarcane.
Between 1 October 2024 and 15 May 2025, the country produced a total of 257.44 lakh tonnes of sugar. This includes 92.76 lakh tonnes from Uttar Pradesh, 80.95 lakh tonnes from Maharashtra, 40.40 lakh tonnes from Karnataka, 8.92 lakh tonnes from Gujarat,
4.84 lakh tonnes from Tamil Nadu, and 29.57 lakh tonnes from other states such as Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, where crushing has already ended.
