Kharif Acreage in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana Exceeds Last Year

Hyderabad. In two important agricultural producing states of South India- Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the condition of South-west monsoon was not good during the initial phase this time and due to lack of sufficient rain, the pace of sowing of Kharif crops was slow.
But the situation improved to a great extent due to late monsoon rains and when the farmers, who were already prepared for sowing, got the support of good rains, they made a strong effort to increase the area under paddy and maize, especially, in which they also got good success.
The available data shows that compared to last year, during the current year till September 3, the production area of Kharif crops jumped from 117.68 lakh acres to 127.13 lakh acres in Telangana and from 22.48 lakh hectares to 23.74 lakh hectares in Andhra Pradesh. Sowing is still going on at some places in both the states.
In Andhra Pradesh, only paddy is cultivated in more than half the area and its production area has increased from 11.36 lakh hectares last year to 12.97 lakh hectares this time.
Similarly, the sowing area of maize has improved from 1.11 lakh hectares to 1.43 lakh hectares, area of pigeon pea has improved from 2.06 lakh hectares to 2.23 lakh hectares and area of cotton is either equal to last year or less than that. Groundnut is also included in this.
As far as Telangana is concerned, there too the production area of paddy has jumped from 55.67 lakh acres last year to 62.28 lakh acres this time, maize sowing area has increased from 5.06 lakh acres to 6.28 lakh acres and area of cotton has increased from 42.91 lakh acres to 45.47 lakh acres.
The area under tur also improved from 4.74 lakh hectare to 4.79 lakh hectare but the area under soybean production fell from 3.78 lakh acre to 3.62 lakh acre.
