Kharif Crop Acreage in Telangana Slightly Ahead of Last Year

Hyderabad: Telangana, a major producer of paddy and cotton in South India, is witnessing good progress in Kharif crop sowing. By July 29 this year, the total area under Kharif crops in the state rose to 82.66 lakh acres, an increase of 50,000 acres compared to the 82.16 lakh acres sown during the same period last year.

According to the latest report from the State Agriculture Department, the total area under paddy and coarse cereals in Telangana during the current Kharif season declined from 27.54 lakh acres to 25.35 lakh acres compared to the previous year. Due to a rainfall deficit, the area under paddy fell from 21.82 lakh acres to 20.46 lakh acres, while the sown area for maize dropped from 5.40 lakh acres to 4.70 lakh acres. Sowing of sorghum (jowar) and finger millet (ragi) also took place over a smaller area.

The area under pulse crops improved from 5.01 lakh acres last year to 5.25 lakh acres this year. Within this category, the sown area for red gram (tur/arhar) increased from 4.33 lakh acres to 4.43 lakh acres, and the acreage for green gram (moong) rose from 51,000 acres to 63,000 acres. The area under black gram (urad) stood at 17,000 acres, compared to 16,000 acres recorded last year.

Similarly, the acreage for oilseed crops increased from 3.56 lakh acres last year to 3.72 lakh acres this year. Specifically, the sown area for soybean rose from 3.53 lakh acres to 3.67 lakh acres, whereas groundnut and castor were cultivated over a limited area. In Telangana, the cotton cultivation area has risen from 43.03 lakh acres last year to 46.34 lakh acres this season. Similarly, the sugarcane acreage there has also increased from 22,000 acres to 38,000 acres. Good rainfall has now begun across various parts of the state.
