News Capsule: Madhya Pradesh Moong Procurement Issue
★ The Central Government has declined Madhya Pradesh's request to increase the procurement quota for moong. In a letter to the Chief Minister, the Union Agriculture Minister stated that the state should first complete procurement of the quantity already approved before any additional allocation is considered.
★ As of July 29, Madhya Pradesh had procured only about 60,000 tonnes of moong, against the approved procurement target of 454,000 tonnes for the 2025-26 season. This allocation accounts for nearly 87% of the total approved moong procurement in the country.
★ However, the Centre has accepted some of the state's other requests. The last date for fertiliser slot booking has been extended from July 30 to August 10, while the deadline for fertiliser purchase has been extended from August 10 to August 20 until the new distribution system is implemented.
★ The Central Government has fixed the moong procurement limit at 25%. However, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to procure up to 60% of the estimated production (around 3 quintals per acre) in the state. Meanwhile, the farmers' demand for 100% procurement of moong has not been accepted by the Centre.
