Kharif Crop Area Crosses 829 Lakh Hectares

New Delhi. Due to favorable weather and monsoon conditions, Indian farmers are getting good success this time in increasing the sowing area of Kharif crops.

Although the area of most of the crops is ahead compared to last year, there has been a decline in the area of important crops like Arhar (tuvar), urad, soybean and cotton. Sowing of sunflower has also lagged behind.

According to the weekly data of the Union Agriculture Ministry, till July 25 this year, the total production area of Kharif crops has increased to 829.44 lakh hectares, which is 31.75 lakh hectares more than the sowing area of 797.69 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

Under this, paddy production area jumped from 216.16 lakh hectare to 245.13 lakh hectare, sowing area of pulses crops improved from 89.94 lakh hectare to 93.05 lakh hectare and area of coarse cereals increased from 154.97 lakh hectare to 160.72 lakh hectare but area of oilseed crops decreased by 3.84 lakh hectare from 170.73 lakh hectare last year to 166.89 lakh hectare this time.

In cash or industrial crops, production area of sugarcane improved from 54.88 lakh hectare last year to 55.16 lakh hectare this time but sowing area of cotton fell from 105.52 lakh hectare to 103.15 lakh hectare.

Among pulses crops, production area of Arhar (Tuvar) decreased from 38 lakh hectare to 84.90 lakh hectare and sowing area of Urad fell from 17.80 lakh hectare to 16.60 lakh hectare whereas area of Moong increased from 26.36 lakh hectare to 30.60 lakh hectare.

Similarly, among coarse cereals, production area of Maize jumped from 78.92 lakh hectare last year to 85.58 lakh hectare and area of Jowar improved from 12.34 lakh hectare to 12.45 lakh hectare and sowing area of Bajra remained stable at 58 lakh hectare whereas area of Ragi decreased by 60 thousand hectare.

Among oilseed crops, groundnut production area increased from 40.77 lakh hectare to 41.17 lakh hectare and sesame sowing area improved from 7.14 lakh hectare to 7.44 lakh hectare, but soybean area decreased from 121.38 lakh hectare and remained stuck at 116.71 lakh hectare.
