Kharif Sowing in India Back on Track, 75% of Normal Area Covered
★ Sharp increase in sowing of paddy, moong, and maize; cotton and soybean lagging.
★ Kharif season sowing picked up pace during the week ending July 25. This week, 12.1 million hectares were sown, compared to 11 million hectares the previous week. As a result, around 75% of the normal kharif area (109.7 million hectares) has been covered so far.
★ Significant gains were recorded in the area under crops like paddy, moong, and maize, while cotton, soybean, arhar, and urad are still trailing last year’s levels.
★ Overall kharif sowing is 4% higher than last year. As of July 25, total sowing stood at 82.94 million hectares, compared to 79.77 million hectares during the same period last year.
