Ottawa. Government agency Statistics Canada (Stats Can) in its latest report has estimated the lentil production area in Canada to increase to 43.80 lakh acres in 2025, compared to 42.10 lakh acres in 2024, 36.68 lakh acres in 2023 and 43.21 lakh acres in 2022. In 2023, due to dry weather,

the sowing area had declined, but there has been a steady increase since then. Lentil sowing has been completed and the crop is now progressing through various stages.

According to Stats Can, lentil stocks in Canada stood at 11.50 lakh tonnes in December 2023, decreased to 8.04 lakh tonnes in March 2024, and dropped further to 1.65 lakh tonnes by July 2024.

However, with the arrival of the new crop, stocks rose again to 14.89 lakh tonnes in December 2024 and came down to 10.41 lakh tonnes by March 2025.

With a significant increase in sowing area and relatively high stock levels, the supply and availability of lentils in Canada is expected to remain smooth during the 2025-26 marketing season. This will ensure sufficient availability for the global market, including major importing countries like India and Turkey.

In terms of pricing, two key factors will play a crucial role. First, the weather conditions in Canada between July 1 and August 15 will heavily influence lentil production.

Second, the output of lentils in Australia, Canada’s main rival in exports, will also impact global prices. Although India has imposed a 10 percent import duty on lentils, this is not expected to cause serious disruption to trade.

Moreover, 1.50 lakh tonnes of lentils are guaranteed to be imported from Australia at a concessional duty under the annual quota.
