Maharashtra Kharif Sowing Normal, Yet Situation Unusual

Pune. Although despite all the troubles, the production area of Kharif crops in Maharashtra has reached very close to last year, but due to heavy rains and floods, crops have also been damaged in many districts.
Damage to various Kharif crops in more than 8 lakh hectares has already been officially confirmed, but even after that the threat to the crop remained.
According to official data, the total production area of Kharif crops in Maharashtra during the current year till September 2 could reach 145.31 lakh hectares, which is 1.55 lakh hectares less than the sowing area of 146.86 lakh hectares during the same period last year.
In the category of paddy and coarse grains, this time only the production area of maize has jumped from 11.20 lakh hectare to the top level of 14.51 lakh hectare, while the area of paddy has fallen from 15.82 lakh hectare to 15.08 lakh hectare, area of jowar has fallen from 1.05 lakh hectare to 84 thousand hectare and the sowing area of millet has come down from 4.01 lakh hectare to 3.25 lakh hectare.
In pulses crops, the sowing of tur was lagging behind but later it improved from last year's 12.17 lakh hectare to 12.19 lakh hectare.
But the area of moong and urad remained behind last year, the same was the condition of soybean, groundnut and cotton. It is worth noting that Maharashtra is the second largest producer of tur, soybean, cotton and sugarcane in the country, while many other crops including maize are also produced there on a large scale.
In comparison to last year, the production area of soybean has declined from 51.28 lakh hectare to 49.62 lakh hectare, groundnut sowing area has slipped from 1.48 lakh hectare to 1.35 lakh hectare, black gram area has fallen from 3.87 lakh hectare to 3.76 lakh hectare and green gram area has declined from 2.35 lakh hectare to 2.11 lakh hectare.
